When Royal Caribbean launched Icon of the Seas in early 2024, it became the largest cruise ship ever built and set the internet ablaze. Now, the cruise line is preparing to launch Star of the Seas in August 2025, and while the two ships are sisters, they’re not identical twins.

So, what exactly sets them apart? Here’s a fresh look at 10 key differences between Star of the Seas and Icon of the Seas—from homeports and dining to dogs and hot tubs.

1. Different Homeports: Miami vs. Orlando

Icon of the Seas sails from PortMiami, launching its 7-night Caribbean cruises from a custom-built terminal. In contrast, Star of the Seas will be based at Port Canaveral (Orlando). It kicks off with a few shorter 4-night cruises before transitioning to regular 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries—also including a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay.

2. Expanded Dining on Star of the Seas

Icon already boasts over 40 dining options, including Pier 7, Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, Chops Grille, and the Empire Supper Club. Star will push the envelope even further, introducing new venues and enhancements.

Pier 7, in particular, is getting a stylish overhaul, and several yet-to-be-revealed venues promise to bring even more variety to the table.

3. Supper Club Style: New York vs. Chicago

On Icon, the Empire Supper Club evokes the elegance of 1920s New York jazz clubs. Star of the Seas takes a different turn with the Lincoln Park Supper Club, inspired by 1930s Chicago. Expect live music, rich décor, and a throwback fine-dining experience that feels familiar yet fresh.

4. Surfside Gets an Upgrade for Older Kids

Surfside is the family-focused neighborhood that made waves on Icon. While Icon caters primarily to kids under six, Star of the Seas tweaks the model to appeal to families with kids up to age 10.

Expect more interactive play features in Splashaway Bay and Playscape, along with an expanded Water’s Edge pool designed for shared family fun.

5. More Hot Tubs on Star of the Seas

Cruise and relax fans, rejoice! While Icon features nine hot tubs, Star will include ten—bringing back an originally planned tub that had to be cut from Icon due to weight distribution issues.

The extra hot tub will be located near Lime & Coconut and the AquaDome Market.

6. A Brand-New Aqua Show

The AquaDome is one of the most eye-popping features on both ships. Icon of the Seas introduced Aqua Action!, a show packed with diving stunts, robotic choreography, and a massive waterfall.

Star of the Seas will retain the AquaDome structure but debut an entirely new production—featuring advanced tech, improved effects, and a new storyline to wow audiences all over again.

7. Enhanced Kids’ and Teen Spaces

Adventure Ocean and teen lounges are onboard both ships, but Star of the Seas will introduce a few thoughtful changes based on cruiser feedback. These include more “analog play” options—think hands-on games and activities that don’t involve screens. It’s a nice balance to today’s tech-heavy entertainment landscape.

8. Mystery Venue on Deck 6

Deck 6 on Icon of the Seas is home to The Attic, a comedy club popular with adults looking for a laugh. On Star, something curious appears on the deck plan: a dining venue in that same spot.

While Royal Caribbean hasn’t confirmed exactly what’s coming, fans are speculating that it could be a totally new concept, replacing the comedy venue.

9. The Pearl Gets a Stunning Upgrade

The Pearl—an architectural lighting marvel—is a must-see centerpiece on Icon of the Seas. Star will enhance it with full multicolor rings, giving even more depth and vibrancy to the kinetic display of 3,500 shimmering tiles. It’s the first thing guests will see when boarding, and now it’ll shine even brighter.

10. Meet Sailor, Star’s Chief Dog Officer

Icon introduced the world to Rover, a lovable golden retriever and ship mascot. Star of the Seas now has its own pup: Sailor, a nearly 6-month-old golden retriever who’s already stealing hearts.

Sailor will serve as Chief Dog Officer, bringing smiles and plenty of photo ops to guests onboard.
