On September 9, 2024, after completing its summer itinerary with Phoenix Reisen, the World Odyssey departed from IJmuiden, Netherlands, to begin its journey for Semester at Sea’s Fall Voyage. The ship will traverse three continents, ultimately docking in Thailand on December 22, 2024. Aboard this 520-passenger vessel, participants become part of an academic community and enjoy an immersive educational experience while visiting some of the world’s most intriguing destinations.
During the voyage, students have the chance to delve into 25 academic disciplines, with coursework provided through Semester at Sea’s affiliation with Colorado State University. Participants earn 12 to 15 university credits during their semester at sea, making it a blend of both travel and academic enrichment. This remarkable program, which combines the best of classroom education and field studies, takes students to diverse regions, fostering global understanding and intercultural competence.
Exploring the Itinerary: Where the World Odyssey Will Travel
Europe and Africa: Starting the Voyage
The journey kicks off in Northern Europe, with the first major stop in Lisbon, Portugal. Known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture, Lisbon provides the perfect introduction to the voyage’s diverse destinations. From Portugal, the World Odyssey sails to Casablanca, Morocco – a city that seamlessly blends old-world traditions with modern-day life.
The ship will then head towards West Africa, docking in two destinations in Ghana: Tema and Takoradi. Following this stop, the vessel travels to Kochi, India, a city brimming with culture, historic architecture, and a rich spice trade history. The Spring Voyage: A New Route, New Adventures
Semester at Sea’s World Odyssey doesn’t stop after the Fall Voyage. After completing the Fall itinerary, the ship will offer a Spring Voyage starting in Bangkok and concluding in Bremerhaven, Germany. This 106-day journey will visit 11 cities across ten countries, retracing the Fall Voyage itinerary in reverse order.
One of the main highlights of the Spring Voyage is a visit to Penang, Malaysia. Known for its street art, food scene, and historic architecture, Penang promises an enriching experience. Additionally, the ship will dock in Mombasa, Kenya, offering students the chance to explore East Africa’s coastline, local markets, and wildlife.
Before returning to Europe, the ship will also stop in La Coruña, Spain. Known for its picturesque coastline, historic buildings, and vibrant local culture, La Coruña is a perfect European destination to round off the voyage before heading back to the ship’s summer schedule in Germany.
World Odyssey’s Role with Phoenix Reisen: Summer Cruises in Europe
After completing both the Fall and Spring voyages with Semester at Sea, the World Odyssey will return to its summer cruising schedule with Phoenix Reisen under its original name, Deutschland. Throughout the summer of 2025, the vessel will embark on various seven- to 16-night cruises throughout Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, offering guests a chance to explore coastal cities, islands, and cultural landmarks.
These itineraries range from exploring the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic Sea to discovering the diverse cultures of the Mediterranean.
