Princess Cruises is setting new standards in environmental stewardship and sustainable cruise operations with the introduction of cutting-edge food waste digesters aboard its flagship vessel, Sun Princess. As a leader in the cruise industry’s eco-friendly initiatives, Princess Cruises is pioneering the adoption of advanced waste management technologies to address the critical challenge of food waste onboard, showcasing a significant leap towards sustainable cruising.
Navigating the Challenges of Food Waste at Sea
The disposal and management of food waste is a daunting challenge for cruise ships, encompassing both environmental and financial concerns. Traditional methods of disposing of food waste ashore have compounded the complexity of waste management on the high seas. However, unlike some cruise lines that still opt for sea disposal, Princess Cruises has embraced innovation by implementing food waste digesters on the Sun Princess, following in the footsteps of its parent company, Carnival Corporation’s other cruise lines.
A Leap Towards Sustainable Waste Management
Hosting 4,300 guests and 1,500 crew members, Sun Princess stands as a behemoth among cruise ships, grappling daily with the colossal task of managing the food waste generated by nearly 6,000 individuals. To combat this, Princess Cruises has installed 26 LFC biodigesters, employing natural aerobic digestion technology to transform food waste into water. This groundbreaking approach not only diminishes the environmental impact of traditional waste disposal methods but also offers substantial operational cost savings. Capable of processing up to 6000 kg (13200 lb) of food waste daily, these digesters mark a significant enhancement in waste management efficiency onboard.
Following digestion, the wastewater is treated to meet drinking quality standards, showcasing a commitment to environmental compliance and sustainable practices, in line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations and MARPOL guidelines.
Iain Milnes, President of Power Knot, underscores the initiative’s significance: “By integrating our LFC biodigesters and WEP effluent pumps into the Sun Princess, we’re pioneering a cleaner, more sustainable future for the cruise industry.”
Embarking on Eco-Friendly Voyages with Sun Princess
The Sun Princess not only debuts as Princess Cruises’ first LNG-powered ship but also exemplifies environmental responsibility with its comprehensive eco-friendly features. From advanced air and water treatment systems to energy-efficient LED lighting and innovative air lubrication technology, the ship is designed to minimize its ecological footprint. Despite initial challenges, the Sun Princess embarked on its maiden 10-day Mediterranean voyage, promising guests an unparalleled eco-conscious cruising experience.
The Future of Sustainable Cruising
As the Sun Princess carves its path through the Mediterranean, Princess Cruises is already laying the groundwork for its next Sphere Class vessel, the Star Princess, slated for a 2025 launch. This ongoing commitment to environmental innovation and sustainable cruising solidifies Princess Cruises’ position at the forefront of the cruise industry’s eco-friendly transformation.
