Weather Ruins a Cruise
Embarking from Southampton, England on May 13, the Sky Princess Cruise ship set sail on a journey that promised an unforgettable Nordic exploration, visiting picturesque ports in Norway and Iceland before returning to England on May 27. However, unforeseen circumstances have led to significant changes in the itinerary, leaving passengers disappointed.
Unpredictable weather conditions have played a major role in forcing alterations to the original plans. The cruise began smoothly, with visits to idyllic ports like Skjolden, Olden, and Alesund in Norway, all set against stunning backdrops. The ship, a majestic Royal-class vessel weighing 145,281 gross tons, was then scheduled to venture to several Icelandic ports, including Akureyri, Isafjord, Grundarfjordur, and Reykjavik. Unfortunately, the region’s unpredictable weather patterns have necessitated multiple adjustments, with the captain prioritizing the safety of the guests.
One of the highly anticipated destinations, Akureyri, located at the end of Iceland’s longest fjord, had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, much to the passengers’ disappointment. Isafjordur, known for its enchanting fjords and Viking history, was initially removed from the itinerary but was later added back when the weather improved, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the changes.
The charming port of Grundarfjordur, nestled between mountains and the ocean, was also originally planned as a stop but had to be cancelled due to unfavorable weather conditions. Lastly, Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland, was meant to be a highlight for passengers eager to immerse themselves in the city’s rich history, cuisine, and culture. However, persistent adverse weather led to the cancellation of the scheduled visit on May 23, further adding to the list of weather-related changes.
Adding to the complexity, the cancellation of Akureyri initially due to weather conditions was reinstated on an emergency basis. The ship had to return to port due to a medical emergency onboard, showcasing the challenges faced by the crew and passengers. Unfortunately, the weather conditions are expected to remain treacherous, with forecasted winds of up to 50 miles per hour, gusts reaching 70 miles per hour, and towering waves exceeding 33 feet on May 23. These conditions persist as the 3,660-guest Sky Princess sails back to Southampton on May 24, with a slight improvement expected in the evening. The ship is scheduled to arrive at its British homeport on May 27.
Although such weather conditions are not uncommon for the region, the timing has been particularly unfortunate for the guests on this cruise. The Icelandic ports, known for their challenging navigation due to sudden weather changes, have posed difficulties throughout the journey.
The repeated alterations to the itinerary have had a noticeable impact on the guests. Many passengers had made arrangements for tours with external companies, which had to be cancelled and rebooked in accordance with the changing schedule, adding an extra layer of complexity to their cruise experience. Fortunately, guests who booked their shore excursions through the cruise line can typically expect refunds for any costs incurred due to missed tours. However, for those who made arrangements with outside companies, it is at the discretion of the Icelandic tour operators whether or not refunds will be provided for the cancelled tours.
It is worth mentioning that not only are the current guests onboard the Sky Princess experiencing challenges with their cruise itinerary, but some guests have also booked back-to-back cruises following this one. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the Norwegian coast next week does not appear favorable for them, indicating potential disruptions ahead.
