Celebrity Cruises Is Building 10 River Ships—Because One Just Isn’t Enough

Well, well, well. Looks like Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group are at it again, proving once more that they don’t know the meaning of “starting small.” Because why dip a toe in the river cruise market when you can cannonball in with ten brand-new ships? That’s right—Celebrity Cruises is launching a whole fleet of river cruise ships, and the competition is probably crying into their overpriced cocktails as we speak.

Celebrity Cruises Takes to the Rivers (With Ten Ships, No Less)

Royal Caribbean just announced its latest grand scheme: Celebrity River Cruises, a premium river cruise experience set to launch bookings this year and officially set sail in 2027. This isn’t just a “testing the waters” situation—nope, they’ve committed to a whopping ten ships right off the bat. Apparently, restraint is for amateurs.

According to Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, the company is diving headfirst into the river cruise market because they know their guests are itching for a more intimate, culturally immersive travel experience. Translation: half their existing customers are already flirting with river cruises, so why let someone else take their money?

“We are the best in the world at delivering the vacation of a lifetime, and this is the latest example of how we are building the capabilities to deliver a lifetime of vacations,” Liberty boasted in the press release.

Well, he’s not wrong. But seriously, a lifetime of vacations? I barely have the budget for a weekend of vacations, but go off, Jason.

Bringing the Edge to the River

Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, is equally hyped about this bold expansion, claiming that the new Celebrity River Cruises will bring all the “quality and sophistication” of their Edge Series ocean ships to some of the world’s most famous rivers.

“We’ve redefined travel on the ocean with our best-in-class hospitality, award-winning food and beverage experiences, and elevated design and style,” said Bethge. “We are thrilled to bring these experiences to the river and combine them with authentic, destination-rich itineraries that will give our guests an experience unlike any other.”

So, in other words, expect fancy cabins, overpriced cocktails, and the kind of design aesthetic that makes you question your entire home décor. But instead of cruising the open sea, you’ll be gliding down European rivers like the Rhine, Danube, or Seine, sipping Champagne and pretending you know the difference between Baroque and Rococo architecture.

What Does This Mean for Other River Cruise Lines?

Oh, I can tell you exactly what it means—they’re panicking.

Imagine you run a cozy little river cruise company, happily selling your customers on the intimate, boutique experience of slowly drifting past medieval castles. Then, out of nowhere, Celebrity Cruises bursts through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man, throwing ten brand-new ships into the game.

I guarantee you there was at least one emergency board meeting where the phrase “Oh, crap” was uttered more than once. Let’s be real: this is like a luxury cruise line deciding to open a neighborhood coffee shop—and then bringing in ten Starbucks locations on opening day.

You just know every other river cruise executive spent their morning updating their resumes on LinkedIn.

Why Should You Care?

Look, if you’ve ever been on an ocean cruise and thought, this is great, but I wish there were more castles, less seasickness, and fewer rogue waves trying to ruin my cocktail, then this is fantastic news for you.

River cruises are already popular for travelers who prefer a slower, more scenic journey packed with history, culture, and (let’s be honest) wine. Now, Celebrity is promising to take all the glitz, glamour, and sheer over-the-top-ness of its ocean cruises and bring it to river cruising. Translation: get ready for some seriously fancy floating hotels.

What to Expect from Celebrity River Cruises

While Celebrity hasn’t revealed the exact details of their ships yet, we can make some educated guesses:

  • Luxury Suites That Make Your Apartment Look Sad – If their ocean ships are anything to go by, expect cabins so swanky that you’ll contemplate selling a kidney just to upgrade to a suite.
  • Michelin-Worthy Dining (at a Michelin-Worthy Price) – Celebrity is known for its high-end dining, so be prepared to eat your weight in gourmet meals—assuming you can afford it.
  • Spa Services That Will Ruin You for Regular Life – Because nothing says “vacation” like paying someone an absurd amount of money to rub fancy oils on your back while you pretend you don’t have emails waiting.
  • Insanely Instagrammable Views – You’re going to see castles, vineyards, charming villages, and historical landmarks—so start working on your humblebrag captions now.

Will Celebrity Dominate the River Cruise Market?

Well, they’re certainly trying. Ten ships in one go? That’s an aggressive move. But let’s be honest—they’re Celebrity Cruises. They know how to make a splash.

The real question is: will their ultra-luxury, ultra-modern approach resonate with traditional river cruisers? Or will it feel like throwing a Vegas nightclub into the middle of the peaceful Danube? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—this is going to shake up the industry in a big way.

What Do You Think?

Are you excited about Celebrity River Cruises, or do you think they’re overdoing it? Will this disrupt the traditional river cruise experience, or is it just what the industry needs? Drop your thoughts in the comments below—I promise to read them while pretending I can afford one of these cruises.
