Cruise Delay Due to Weather
Carnival Sunshine’s much-anticipated 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, scheduled to set sail on Sunday, February 16, 2025, faced an unexpected delay due to adverse weather conditions. Although guests boarded the ship on time, the vessel remained docked in Norfolk, Virginia, until it was safe to depart.
Carnival Cruise Line proactively informed guests the day before embarkation, citing concerns about incoming poor weather.
“Our Fleet Operations Center is actively monitoring a cold front that is set to impact the Norfolk area Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning,” the notification explained. “Strong winds and high waves will make it unsafe to depart as previously scheduled.”
Due to these dangerous conditions, Carnival Sunshine remained docked until the rough weather subsided, with plans to set sail around 6 a.m. on Monday, February 17.
Embarkation and Onboard Experience Remained Unchanged
While the ship remained docked, guests were still able to board Carnival Sunshine as planned on February 16. Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that there were no changes to embarkation times, and guests were asked to adhere to their pre-selected terminal arrival appointments.
“All guests should arrive within their pre-selected Terminal Arrival Appointment,” the email confirmed. “Embarkation will close by the final boarding time indicated on the boarding pass.”
However, there were some limitations to onboard activities during the delay. The casino and shops remained closed while docked due to local restrictions, but most other activities and events continued as scheduled. Once the ship reached international waters, all amenities were expected to reopen.
Impact on the Cruise Itinerary
The more than 12-hour delay impacted Carnival Sunshine’s original itinerary, leading to the cancellation of the planned visit to Princess Cays on Friday, February 21. However, the remaining ports of call, Amber Cove and Grand Turk, were extended to allow guests more time to enjoy those destinations.
The new schedule for port visits included:
- Amber Cove: Originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ship will now dock on Friday, February 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving guests an additional hour ashore.
- Grand Turk: Originally planned for Thursday, February 20 from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The visit now extends from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering an extra two-and-a-half hours to explore the island.
Any pre-paid excursions for Princess Cays purchased through Carnival Cruise Line will be refunded to guests’ Sail and Sign accounts, along with any associated taxes and fees. Tours for Amber Cove will be adjusted to reflect the revised schedule.
Safety Comes First
Carnival Cruise Line emphasized that the safety of guests and crew members remains their top priority. “We were looking forward to delivering the itinerary we had planned and share your disappointment for this weather-related change but trust you will understand that your safety is a priority,” the email explained.
Although last-minute itinerary changes are common in the cruise industry due to weather-related factors, it is less typical for a ship to remain at its homeport for an extended period while waiting for improved conditions.
As of noon on embarkation day, winds near the entrance to Chesapeake Bay were reported as high as 36 knots (41 miles per hour). Cruise ships are capable of sailing in high winds, but the decision to delay departure considered factors such as wind direction, wave swells, and navigation challenges. Staying docked ensured the safety and comfort of everyone aboard.
