This cutting-edge technology allows cruise ships to connect to the local electrical grid, dramatically reducing their environmental impact while docked. Carnival Corporation’s Carnival Conquest was the first ship to plug into this innovative system, marking a new chapter in the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Significance of Shore Power in PortMiami

Shore power, also known as “cold ironing,” is a game-changer for ports and the environment. By allowing ships to draw power from the local grid instead of running their diesel engines, the technology significantly cuts down on emissions of harmful pollutants like sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide. At PortMiami, this initiative is expected to reduce emissions by up to 98% at the equipped terminals. This reduction is equivalent to removing approximately 7,500 cars from the road for each terminal. With shore power available at five terminals, the cumulative impact equates to taking 37,500 cars off the road.

PortMiami, which handled nearly 7.3 million cruise passengers in 2023, is the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard to offer shore power at five berths. This monumental effort is a collaboration between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company, and several major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Virgin Voyages.

Carnival Conquest: Leading the Charge

Carnival Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, proudly became the first to utilize the shore power system at PortMiami. Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “This is an important milestone for our hometown, and we’re proud to support Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and all county and port officials for their amazing partnership in bringing shore power to PortMiami.”

The Carnival Conquest, which is homeported in Miami, was the first ship to connect to the shore power grid after returning from a 3-night cruise to Nassau, Bahamas. The vessel’s ability to plug into the local electrical grid exemplifies Carnival’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and supporting the port’s broader sustainability goals.

Investment in a Sustainable Future

The development of the shore power program at PortMiami represents a significant investment in the port’s future and environmental stewardship. The project’s estimated cost is $125 million, which includes the installation of shore power technology across five terminals. This investment was made possible through a combination of public and private funding, including $21.7 million in grants from the Florida Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The shore power initiative at PortMiami aligns with broader trends in the cruise industry toward greater sustainability. According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), 30% of global cruise ships—representing 40% of passenger capacity—are equipped with shore power technology. However, the number of ports worldwide capable of providing this service is still relatively small, with fewer than 20 ports globally offering shore power to cruise ships.

Carnival Corporation’s embrace of shore power is part of its larger strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize its environmental footprint. Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Using shoreside electricity to power our ships in port is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and minimize our environmental footprint.”

As part of its decarbonization efforts, Carnival Corporation aims to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. The company has already reduced its emissions by over 10% since 2011, despite a 30% increase in passenger capacity. Currently, 67% of Carnival Corporation’s fleet, including ships from Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Seabourn Cruises, and AIDA Cruises, is equipped with shore power technology. By the end of 2024, three additional ships in Carnival’s fleet will be retrofitted to support shore power, further enhancing the company’s sustainability profile.

The Future of Shore Power

Looking ahead, Carnival Corporation plans to expand its shore power capabilities even further. The company has partnered with Swiss technology provider ABB Group to add 30 more shore power connections across its fleet in the coming years. This expansion is crucial as more ports around the world begin to adopt shore power technology.
