In the ever-expanding universe of cruise travel tips, some advice is golden, and some are downright laughable. Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, has taken to his Facebook page to offer a stern but amusing warning: not all hacks are created equal. Let’s dive into the world of cruise myths, scams, and the truths that Carnival wants you to know.

The Carnival Upgrade Myth

The internet is brimming with tips on how to get a free cruise, score an upgrade, or save a ton of money. While there are legitimate ways to get better pricing or even freebies, there’s also a fair share of scams floating around. For instance, a savvy travel agent might secure you onboard credit or an upgrade from an interior room to a balcony. Gamblers might even snag a free room using services like URComped or by sharing their land-based free-room offers with their cruise line of choice.

However, not all advice is sound. Cruise pricing is notoriously volatile, with lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival using demand-based pricing models. This means today’s price might jump or plummet based on booking patterns. Some strategies can help you snag the best price, but beware: not everything you read online is trustworthy.

Debunking the Claustrophobic Upgrade “Hack”

Recently, Heald used his popular Facebook platform to debunk a supposed hack for getting a free room upgrade. According to a post he encountered, the hack involved going to the front desk upon boarding and claiming claustrophobia to get a free upgrade to a balcony room. This “hack” was purportedly successful on four out of five occasions for one traveler.

Heald didn’t mince words in his response. “Well, this comes from a Facebook page where this past week we had false and fabricated comments,” he wrote. “They were investigated. Both were total bollocks. And now we have the hat trick. This ‘hack’ is only true in the same sense it’s true that I am on the front cover of ‘Cruise Industry News’ under the banner ‘Cruising’s Hottest and Most Influential Man, 2024.’”

With a touch of humor, Heald explained why such an onboard upgrade is virtually impossible. “Our ships are mostly always sold out this year and many are in 2025 too. We simply cannot do upgrades, so standing in line at Guest Services on their busiest day to ask for an upgrade is a waste of your time and, quite frankly, a waste of the guest services team as well who could be helping other guests on what is their busiest day,” he added.

The Real State of Carnival’s Bookings

One of the key reasons upgrades are hard to come by is Carnival’s robust booking status. Carnival’s Chief Executive, Josh Weinstein, highlighted this during the cruise line’s first-quarter earnings call. “Customer deposits beat last year’s record by another $1.3 billion, contributing to our strong cash flow and enabling us to prepay another $1.8 billion of debt already this year, which is on top of the $4 billion we prepaid last year,” he stated.

Weinstein elaborated that Carnival achieved all-time high booking volumes at significantly higher prices. The cruise line set booking records in both North America and Europe, with prices surging into double digits for the limited inventory left for Q2. Prices remained high for the peak summer period in Q3 and Q4, while still building on their occupancy advantage.

“We are capturing more new guests than ever before, which coupled with our growing base of repeat guests delivers greater overall demand. Our brands are delivering sustainable revenue growth that hits the bottom line,” Weinstein added.

Keeping it Real: How to Actually Get Cruise Deals

While the myth of the claustrophobic upgrade is debunked, there are legitimate ways to enjoy a better cruise experience without falling for scams. Here are some real tips:

  1. Use a Reputable Travel Agent: They can help you get onboard credit, upgrades, and other perks.
  2. Join Loyalty Programs: Frequent cruisers often get special deals and bonuses.
  3. Book Early or Last Minute: Both strategies can yield significant savings, depending on your flexibility.
  4. Monitor Prices: Use price tracking tools to book when prices drop.
  5. Consider Off-Peak Cruises: Cruises during less popular times of the year can be cheaper and less crowded.

Sail Smart, Laugh Hard

Carnival’s humorous debunking of the upgrade myth serves as a reminder to be cautious about the tips and tricks you encounter online. Not every hack will work, and some are outright fabrications. As you plan your next cruise, use reputable sources and sound strategies to ensure you get the best experience without wasting your time or effort. And remember, a good laugh at the expense of a bogus hack is always a bonus!
