Social Media Misinformation
Social media is an excellent resource for finding insider tips from frequent cruisers, but passengers need to be cautious about the advice they believe. Recently, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald debunked a misleading “tip” regarding an item in the staterooms of their Excel-class ships, which could be dangerous for some passengers.
The Upholstered “Box” Misconception
The confusion centered around an upholstered “box” found under the vanity area in staterooms aboard the Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee ships. Some passengers believed these boxes were coolers or refrigerators, potentially for storing drinks or medication. However, these boxes are actually stools and storage units, not designed to cool or refrigerate items.
Potential Dangers
Believing these storage ottomans to be coolers could lead to serious issues, especially if passengers store temperature-sensitive medications or infant formula in them, as these items could spoil. Heald emphasized that a simple examination would reveal there are no cooling mechanisms, such as a power source or drainage valve, in these boxes.
Alternatives for Cooling Needs
While select staterooms on Carnival ships do have mini-bars with coolers, they may not always meet the needs for storing medication that requires precise temperatures. Carnival Cruise Line offers portable medi-coolers for rent, and the onboard Medical Center can assist with refrigeration if needed. Guests can also request an ice bucket from their cabin attendant or get a glass of ice from buffet drink stations.
The Importance of Accurate Information
This incident underscores the importance of verifying advice and tips related to cruising. While fellow cruisers’ advice can be helpful, it is crucial to cross-check such information with reliable sources like Carnival Cruise Line’s website or directly with representatives like John Heald. This ensures passengers have accurate information and avoid potential risks.
