John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, recently posted a plea on his Facebook page asking passengers to help Carnival Cruise reduce energy consumption by turning off the lights when leaving their cabins. In a humorous tone, Heald shared a bit of his personal life, noting that he often gets annoyed when his daughter leaves the lights on at home, which he related to the cruise industry’s challenge.
“Now some of the ships have the key slot system where you place your key when you enter the room, which allows you to turn on the lights (it does not affect the air conditioning), and when you take the key out, it turns the lights off. This system helps save electricity,” Heald explained. However, he also acknowledged that many passengers have found a way to bypass this system.
The Key Slot Workaround: A Common Hack Among Passengers
Despite Carnival’s efforts to make energy conservation convenient with the key card slot system, some passengers have found a loophole. Instead of using their actual cabin key, they use a spare card — whether it’s an old hotel room card or a membership card — to keep the lights on when they’re not in the room. This workaround allows the lights to stay on without requiring their key to be removed from a lanyard or wallet.
One passenger, Shawn Caccia, explained the logic behind the hack: “Honestly, it’s more so that we don’t have to take our keys out of our lanyards just to work the lights! Just like at home, when we leave, we turn the lights off, when we return, we turn them on. Pretty simple but trying to take your sign-and-sail out of that lanyard plastic once it’s in there, that’s the real pain.”
Although many passengers have understandable reasons for using this hack, Carnival Cruise is kindly asking guests to refrain from it and instead cooperate by turning the lights off manually when leaving the room.
