Carnival Corporation Launches Innovative Solar Energy Project at Amber Cove Cruise Center, Dominican Republic

In a landmark move towards environmental sustainability, Carnival Corporation & plc proudly announced the launch of a state-of-the-art solar energy park at Amber Cove Cruise Center, situated in the breathtaking Dominican Republic. This groundbreaking initiative features over 1,800 solar panels, poised to supply an impressive 80% of the port’s energy requirements, marking a significant leap towards green energy use in the tourism and cruise industry.

Celebrated with a grand ribbon-cutting event, this launch was graced by esteemed figures such as Joel Santos, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of the Presidency, and Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, alongside notable leaders from government, industry, and the local community. This gathering underscored the collective commitment to eco-friendly practices and the importance of renewable energy in fostering sustainable tourism.

Christine Duffy highlighted the project’s dual benefits, enhancing guests’ experience in the Dominican Republic while adhering to Carnival Corporation’s stringent environmental stewardship principles. “Our dedication to the environment goes hand-in-hand with our efforts to provide unforgettable experiences for our guests. The Amber Cove solar park is a testament to our commitment to sustainable energy sources,” Duffy stated.

Joel Santos lauded the project as a pioneering achievement for the Dominican Republic, making Amber Cove the first cruise terminal in the country to embrace such a significant solar energy project. “This initiative not only contributes to clean energy production but also aligns with our environmental sustainability goals for Puerto Plata, a leading tourist destination in the Dominican Republic,” Santos commented.

Transitioning to solar energy at Amber Cove will dramatically reduce the port’s dependency on fossil fuels, thereby decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 1,000 tons annually. This effort is equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting over 30,000 trees, showcasing Carnival Corporation’s commitment to combating climate change and protecting the environment.

Nestled along the Dominican Republic’s northern coast near historic Puerto Plata, Amber Cove Cruise Center is a jewel among Carnival Corporation’s portfolio of exclusive port destinations and islands. The 25-acre facility offers an array of amenities, including dining, shopping, aquatic activities, and unique shore excursions that celebrate the rich cultural and natural heritage of the region. In December 2023, the port celebrated a significant milestone, welcoming over one million guests, which represents a major share of cruise visitor traffic to the Dominican Republic.
